The Essential Guide to Recessed Lighting Spacing
Installing recessed lighting (also known as can lights, downlights, or pot lights) dramatically updates a home, providing seamless illumination without visual clutter. However, proper spacing and positioning require balancing architectural geometry, ceiling height, and room illumination needs.
1. The Ceiling Height ÷ 2 Rule of Thumb
The standard architectural benchmark used by electrical contractors and interior designers is to divide ceiling height by two to find the ideal spacing between recessed fixtures:
- 8-Foot Ceilings: Space fixtures approximately 4 feet apart.
- 9-Foot Ceilings: Space fixtures approximately 4.5 feet apart.
- 10-Foot Ceilings: Space fixtures approximately 5 feet apart.
- 12-Foot Ceilings: Space fixtures approximately 6 feet apart.
2. Distance from Walls (The Half-Distance Rule)
To prevent dark shadow corners while avoiding harsh parabolic light scallops on your drywall, position your outer rows of fixtures half the distance of your fixture-to-fixture spacing away from the perimeter walls:
Distance to Wall = Spacing Between Lights ÷ 2
3. Eliminating Shadows on Kitchen Countertops
A common error in kitchen lighting design is placing can lights directly in the center of the walkway. When standing at the countertop to chop or prep food, your head casts a dark shadow over your work surface. To avoid this, locate recessed fixtures 24 to 26 inches away from the wall, directly aligning the light beam over the center of your 25-inch countertop.
